Reiki (pronounced "ray-key"), is a Japanese technique for relaxation that promotes the body's ability to heal itself, both physically and emotionally. Reiki is a universal life force energy, that practitioners use to help heal others. Reiki can be given in-person or via distance healing. Both are equally effective.
Reiki is done by having the client lie on a massage table, or couch, while fully clothed, aside from the removal of shoes. The practitioner will move their hands a couple inches above the client's body, and may at times place their hands on certain areas such as the head, collar bone, shoulders, abdomen, feet, etc. A warm, soothing energy flows from the hands to the client, and the client may experience warm or cool sensations, tingling, deep relaxation, and even sleep.
No two sessions are the same, as the practitioner uses their intuitive abilities to access what areas need healing, and may at times be able to sense blockages in the chakras (energy houses within the body), and if the client would prefer, the practitioner can describe what they are sensing or seeing.
Reiki is done to help remove the negative energies that build up in the body, both from physical activity, as well as emotional stresses we all experience through our lives. Once the negative energy is addressed, the practitioner then directs the flow of reiki to add in more positive energy. The client typically will feel lighter, less stressed, more confident, joyful, and awakened after a session. It may be necessary to receive several sessions to alleviate more deeply rooted, or serious issues.
To better prepare you for your reiki session, try these tips:
~ Avoid caffeine two hours prior to your appointment
~ Avoid nicotine, and any form of smoking two hours prior
~ Get a good night sleep the night before
~ Drink plenty of water the day before, and day of
~ Avoid excessive red meat, and heavily processed foods the day before and the day of your appointment
~ Wear loose, comfortable clothing to your session
After your session, keep these tips in mind:
~ Drink plenty of water to help ground you, and flush any toxins that may begin to be released from the body
~ Take it easy for a couple hours afterwards, as you may need to readjust to the new sensations ~ Take some time over the next few days to sit silently and reflect or meditate
~ You may want to journal about your session and what you experience over the next couple of weeks
If you have any questions or concerns, do not hesitate to ask your practitioner. They are there to help guide you through your experience, and help you realize your inner self. If you are unable to lay on your back, just let them know and arrangements can easily be made. Reiki can be given standing, sitting, or laying down, so it's nothing to worry about if you require accommodations.
Please be sure to arrive no more than 5 minutes prior to your scheduled time, and be advised that you may need to plan to stay for about 15 minutes after the end of the session so that you become grounded once again, and are not still lightheaded, etc.
Reiki is safe for all ages, including through pregnancy and childbirth.
